Launched on May 23, 2000, the Zion Canyon Transportation System was established to reduce traffic congestion, parking problems, and noise; protect wildlife and vegetation, and restore cleaner air and tranquility to Zion Canyon.
Prior to the shuttle system, Zion National Park received about 2.4 million visitors a year. Today Zion National Park receives about 2.7 annual visitors from all over the world. Click here to view a chart detailing Zion’s annual shuttle ridership.
The Zion Shuttle System operates full-time from the beginning of April through the end of October. During that time the 6-mile long Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to all private vehicles, except for guests who have reservations at Zion Lodge. Zion Lodge guests are issued a special permit which allows them to drive on the Scenic Drive to Zion Lodge only. The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway, the main road through Zion National Park is open to all traffic, year-round. |

The shuttle system runs in two separate loops; the Zion Canyon Loop and the Springdale Town Loop. The canyon buses run every six minutes during the day making eight stops at trailheads and points of interest in the canyon. The roundtrip travel time on the Canyon Loop is about 90 minutes. The town buses run about every fifteen minutes during the day servicing nine stops in Springdale. This convenient service allows visitors to leave their car at their hotel and ride the free shuttle to Zion National Park, as well as the restaurants and shops in Springdale. At the height of the summer season, bus service begins as early as 5:45 am and runs until 11:00 pm. |
